Sophisticated. Sexy. Strong. Thus was the beauty trend on the catwalk for the upcoming season. Aptly placed eye liner and deep, rich eye shadows were perfectly balanced with radiant, dewy skin. The end result? Sultry eyes & gorgeous skin that were as mesmerizing as the designs they accented. But why should models have all the fun?
And so began my quest to uncover the beauty secrets necessary to make this sizzling look a reality. Where did my journey lead? To none other than Sr. Make Up Artist Jen Gaum of Glo Professional, Denver. Read on as she unveils in our interview beauty tips and tricks for creating this look at home.
BBS: Most women automatically think to apply heavy eyeliner and eye shadow creating a look that’s harsh and aging. What application tips would you recommend for achieving the attached look for the eyes?
JG: The Smokey Eye is always in fashion. There are many ways to achieve this look and it doesn’t always have to be very dramatic. For someone who is new to this look I recommend to start light and then building color. It is always easier to increase color instead of removing.
1. Before any eye shadow is applied, start off with an eye lid primer blended into the entire eye lid area to create an ideal canvas.
2. Next press (not brush) the darkest eye color closest to the lashes then blending upward toward the crease of the eye.
3. Then press in a cream eye liner as close to the lashes as possible. *Hint- I love to blend together different textures! To increase definition I will go over the cream eye liner with an eye pencil. It also helps to keep the eye liner on all day. For a softer smokier look, take a dark eye shadow and drag into the lower lash line of the bottom eye with a smudge brush.
4. Next be sure to curl the lashes and then apply several coats of mascara to complete the eye.
*Remember to blend the colors well. You never want to see where one color starts and another one ends!
BBS: The soft romantic look of the face is the perfect contrast to such strong eyes. I’ve seen makeup artists create this look countless times at my photo-shoots and I love it because the skin looks so youthful and fresh. How can this look be recreated at home using the basics that women have in their kits?
JG: I love the healthy radiant look and it looks great on all skin types!
1. I suggest starting off with a face primer to smooth out the surface of the skin.
2. Then take a drop of a liquid highlighter and blend it together with a sheer tint base. Smooth it all over the skin with a foundation brush. This gives the skin a gorgeous flawless finish!
3. Blush is the perfect product to give the right amount of pop on the apples of the cheeks. Sometimes I will apply it before the foundation. It gives a glow from beneath the surface of the skin.
My favorite tip from Jen is perfect for beginners. Not sure which shades to use to create your smokey eyes? No worries, Glo Professional has a Smokey Eye Kit with 4 universal shades that work on all skin tones. The best part? Each kit comes with step by step instructions to help create a flawless finish every time. I love it when beauty is convenient. **
